IRP Renewal: Everything You Need To Know About IRP Plate Renewal

Every year, many truck drivers go to the IRP offices and wait for hours just for their IRP renewals. In many cases, the processing is being delayed and they are penalized which often keeps them off the road for some time.  Luckily for you, Global Multi Services have compiled everything you need to know about IRP Plate Renewal to save you from all these predicaments.

What Does IRP Mean?

The form full of IRP is International Registration Plan and it is an agreement established between ten provinces in Canada and all the states in the US except Alaska and Hawaii. The agreement allows the payment of fees from vehicles traveling across one or more states or provinces. The fee varies from one state to another and is calculated based on miles travel in each state and the weight of the vehicle.

How To Register For IRP

IRP registration allows you to travel across different states and provinces and the required documentation varies from state to state. Therefore, you need to reach out to your base state or province for further information.

Your base state or province is where your vehicle is registered. This means before you can register for IRP, your business must be registered in the state or province with an address, name, listed telephone number. Also, all your operational records must be registered in this state or province.

Procedure For IRP Plate Renewal

The IRP Plate is valid for one year, which means you have to renew it every year. Months or weeks before your IRP Plate expires, the state your vehicle is registered will send you a renewal notice. The deadline for renewal is often written on your IRP card and it varies from one state or province to another. The IRP Plate Renewal process often takes 30-60 days depending on your base state. Therefore, you need to register early to avoid penalties.

After registering for your IRP Plate Renewal, you will receive a billing notice from IRP stating all the information about your mileage reporting. It also includes all your penalty information on every state or province and the renewal schedule. It is important to go through the billing notice and ensures all the information is correct. If you notice any mistake, you can contact the IRP offices for proper correction.

The documents you need for your IRP Plates Renewal includes:

  • Revenue International Registration Plan ( Schedule B)
  • Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return
  • A valid copy of the processed title or application for the title if vehicle ownership has changed.
  • Federal Schedule 1 (For vehicle registered at 55,000 pounds or more)
  • A valid copy of the Authority Lease Agreement if the vehicle is not registered in your name.

Who Are Eligible For IRP Renewal?

Before you are eligible for IRP Plate Renewal, you must first be qualified to register for IRP in your state or province. This means you have proof of permanent place of business in the state or province and your commercial vehicles meet the requirements of the base state or province.
