What is an IRP?

The IRP stands for International Registration Plan, and it has been signed between the forty-eight states of the US, Districts of Columbia, and ten Provinces of Canada. The agreement was signed to give recognition to each participating jurisdiction by all the participating jurisdictions. History Of IRP

Though the history of IRP starts from the year 1968, the vital developments towards the formation of IRP, started from 1972 and on-wards. In 1972, an Ad Hoc Committee named ‘the National Proportional Registration’ was formed at the 1972 AAMVA International conference. Then in 1973, the ‘National Proportional Registration’ was renamed as the ‘International Registration Plan’. In 1974, IRP became international when Alberta became the first Canadian province to sign it. At last, in 2011, the IRP became an independent entity, no longer chaired by the AAMVA.

Who has to register for IRP?

The following classes of vehicles that travel interstate and across borders for commercial purposes have to register for IRP:

• Vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 lbs.
• Vehicles powered by three or more axles.
• And, Vehicles that contain two axles and have a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 lbs and more have to register for the IRP.

There are also some exceptions to these categories, like government-owned vehicles, recreational vehicles, and vehicles displaying restricted plates.
